Bose SoundLink Mini

USB bluetooth and Bose SoundLink Mini

CloudReady was installed on the dynabook N40 last time. The installation itself went well, but there was a problem with bluetooth not working. The built-in bluetooth on the dynabook N40 has been unstable even when I was using Windows 10, and the bluetooth mouse sometimes stopped responding, especially when using Wifi wireless LAN. There may be individual device differences, but Toshiba mini-notebooks seem to have a weak wireless system (just a personal impression).

So I tried using an external bluetooth USB chip. Then, the bluetooth mouse also works well.

Now that I can use bluetooth, I took out my old Bose SoundLink Mini from storage (:-) , and connected it. With this, Youtube and music became a satisfactory situation.

By the way, Bose SoundLink Mini also has a microphone function, so I tried using it for Zoom online meetings, but the sound quality is not so good compared to other microphones nowadays, and of course I won't force myself to use it, so it will be used only for speakers.

CloudReady

Try CloudReady on a dynabook N40.  CloudReady is a Linux-based operating system, but it's easier to say it's a free version of ChromeOS.

I haven't removed Windows 10 yet, so I just  install the CloudReady utility from the Chrome Web Store and create a bootable USB. Reboot and at the first Dynabook logo screen, hit F12 repeatedly(:-). When I changed the boot device to USB and booted, the installation screen appeared without any difficulity.

It can be also a live USB, so I can use it as it is, but as expected, the dynabook N40 does not have USB 3.0 and it is so  slow computer , so it is impossible to use it as it is. This time, I have already made up my mind, so I chose to install it on the hard disk. That means it is farewell to  Windows 10 (:-) (I made a Windows 10 installation USB just in case). In the past, I have so many experience  of Linux installation, so  I thought about the risk of wireless LAN not being recognised and used a USB wired LAN adaptor to connect by wire and execute the installation.

The installation was completed without incident.

At the result, wireless LAN that I was worried about seems to be OK. Compared to when I was running dynabook N40 with Windows 10, it runs so smoothly that I am impressed.

However, after all, everything does not go well, and I was lucky that wireless LAN was OK, but...

1. no sound!

2. Bluetooth is not working.

3. sometimes freezes.

I found out that there was a problem. I'm getting old (:-), so I don't intend to take on every challenge, but I'm going to keep it as a to-do, and prioritise it in consideration of usability and solve them gradually.

Power button

dynabook N40 power button  is located in the top left corner.  For some reason, it requires a 'long press' even when turning the power on. I can understand long-pressing the button to force-quit, but I still don't understand the meaning of long-pressing the button even to turn on the power (:-). Moreover, perhaps because of long time use, it often did not turn on even after more than 10 seconds. At the time, I really wanted to throw it away as it was, but I finally found a way to manage it.
After all, I could guess that the contact between the button and the base was faulty, so I found that if I pressed the button while clipping the LCD panel under the button a little harder with my finger, as shown in the photo, it would be fine. (Naturally, the strength should be at a level that does not break the LCD). It is likely that even this method will eventually fail, but for the time being,  so far so good!

dynabook N40

I am now thinking about finding a new hobby, now that I am almost too old to work in the current company and my children have grown up.

I bought a dynabook N40 as an introduction to computers for my child a long time ago, but the other day my child bought a new one for himself, so he doesn't need it any more. Originally, the lightness and compactness were good, but it has been very hard with windows 10 , so slow, and now I don't feel like using it as it is very much. In addition, the power cable is damaged from years of portable use (sometimes it won't work) and the power button is not responsive, so I was thinking of getting rid of it.

However, when it came time to throw it away, I felt it was a bit of a waste, and remembering the old days, I decided to play with it by installing linux for the first time in a long time.
