dynabook N40

I have Ununtu Japanese Remix installed on my dynabook N40 and external monitor, and using Sikulix, I am enjoying playing reasonably well, but I am actually feeling a limitation. . It was the same when I had CloudReady installed, but Frequent freezes. Sometimes it does not happen for a couple of hours, sometimes it happens every few minutes.
It didn’t happen when I was using Windows 10, so I think there is a possibility to solve the problem, but I’m not sure if it’s a hardware problem? It is very stressful to investigate the hardware problem on a machine where it is occurring (;-).
As expected, I think it would be better to buy a second computer that should be the base and to investigate the dynabook N40 problem, but…

  • Necessity is always the best teacher.

I am still on the fence because I feel that if I buy a new computer, I will never come back to the dynabook N40 (lol).

Ubuntu Remix

I was using Ubuntu on my Dynabook N40, but when I tried to connect it to an external monitor (nothing but TV :-), it froze. However, it's not easy to change the settings of the Xwindow system. If possible, I want to work around it in other ways, so I was investigating various ways and found out that there is something called Ubuntu Japanese Remix.

Ubuntu seems to have various remixes for different purposes, but this is positioned as a distribution specialising in Japanese among them. Of course, as I actually did, regular Ubuntu supports languages from all over the world, and it is possible to select a local language at installation. However, it should be possible to provide detailed support for each local language, so I tried installing this Japanese remix on my Dynabook N40.

I've done uEFInd before, which is a standard procedure (:-), so naturally I set that up too, and when I started it up... it booted up fine and the screen was displayed on the TV !

There was just one problem: when I tried to use both the Dynabook N40 and the REGZA on two screens, the display became very unstable. So now I use it by outputting to REGZA only. Even so, it is still comfortable enough to use.

Freeze

Installed CloudReady on a dynabook N40. bluetooth didn't work and sound didn't work, but by using USB bluetooth instead of the built-in bluetooth and connecting the mouse and speakers, I was able to use it comfortably.

However! The occasional complete freezing has not fixed yet. At first I thought it would settle down once the installation was finished and the settings had been made, but the freezing still occurs frequently, although I can understand if it freezes when the CPU or memory load is high, but there is no law as to when it occurs, and not only during use, but also when I leave it for a while and then come back to it. Once it freezes, I must  force to restart by pressing the power button . Sudden freezing while listening to music comfortably is stressful and not good for health (:-).

If a hardware problem (CPU, memory, board?) is the cause, then farewell (:-).  I have no choice but to give up on the dynabook N40, since I originally started this activity with the aim of reusing a computer that no one seems to use anymore (:-), repair or parts replacement is not an option.

From my experience, Linux is more susceptible to hardware failure than Windows. In my work, it often happened that the moment I changed a server that was working fine with Window to Linux, I detected a hardware error and replaced it. Therefore, I think the possibility of hardware problem is quite high, but there is still a possibility of a software workaround, so I would like to investigate it if any chance.
